It is massively important for companies to have the courage to commit to only putting people in leadership positions that are actually great leaders, period. Great leaders have the ability to influence, inspire, and bring the best out of their team. They have high emotional intelligence and understand how to work with different communication styles and personality types; these things are paramount. It's a huge mistake to make someone a leader of people simply because they have been with the company for a long time or they deserve a promotion.
The reality is that people quit their jobs because of bad leaders over any other factor. You cannot force people to give discretionary effort and try harder than they want to, you can only inspire that from people, and that is what great leaders do. It is not possible to have a successful company or culture and also have garbage leaders.
