One of the most common questions and things that comes up right now is how do we maintain culture? How do we build culture and connection with teams if we're hybrid and remote?

These are 3 simple things you can do over a Zoom or Teams call that is just a fun way to build connection and get people to know each other better.

Take them, mix them up, be creative with them.

1. Show and tell.

We did this with our team a couple of times, and it's so much fun. People come and we just have a moment where everyone shares for 2-3 minutes, they grab something from their house or anything, just bring it for show and tell.

It's a good way to connect with people, what people choose to bring and show, it's a way for you to get to know your co-workers. And it's just a fun thing that's not related to work. Show and tell was so fun for us.

2. Scavenger hunt.

Whether it's Teams or Zoom, you can put people into breakout rooms of like 3-4 and then give them 30 minutes or however much time you have to go and collect and do a series of tasks.

It’s competition, it’s fun, it’s high energy. Again, it’s a way to get to know people and connect and do something that's not work but that's really fun together. You could be so creative with it in terms of what they have to gather or what the tasks are.

A scavenger hunt would be a great idea for teams, and it's scalable. It doesn't matter how many people you have, and you could do it between departments, too.

3. Team presentations on passion projects, hobbies, favorite things.

Everybody can answer the question, "What could you give a five or ten minute talk about with no presentation at all?" So we tried it on our team and it was really successful.

You have five minutes to talk about whatever you want. So it can be why "X" movie is the best, or dance, or something completely different that you love. You can take turns once a week or once per month. People can have slides that they also present, or bring in an item to share with it. Again, it's a great way to build connection, get to know your coworkers, do something fun outside of work.
