This pandemic has pulled the curtain back on some glaring priorities in organizations. This has greatly exposed the importance of high quality and caliber leadership and culture inside teams and companies.

In order to successfully navigate times of great change, crisis, or uncertainty, companies must have leaders at the helm who are prioritizing culture, the experience of their people, and their impact as leaders.

Teams with leaders who are highly emotionally intelligent; who understand how to communicate with people and the impact of their communication, who are self aware, empathetic, understanding, and extending people more grace right now are thriving compared to teams that don’t.

In order to successfully navigate times of great change, crisis, or uncertainty, companies must have leaders at the helm who are prioritizing culture, the experience of their people, and their impact as leaders.

In the same vein, companies that have clearly defined, cohesive cultures, where people are intentional and accountable for how they impact each other and show up together, move through times like these with far greater ease and resilience. They still face challenges, but they’ll come out the other side stronger, feeling more connected and cohesive, and remembering how they were supported and taken care of by leadership and each other.

And the opposite is true.

There are plenty of horror stories taking place inside companies right now where leaders are being unsupportive, micromanaging, trying to demand 100% of their teams without acknowledgement or grace for what their people are experiencing. Essentially, treating people like garbage through all of this. The impact of that on those individuals, and the performance of those teams and companies is monumental.

Teams with exceptional culture and leadership navigate change, uncertainty, and crisis with far greater ease and success.

People will remember that they were not supported and taken care of, and how the company showed up for them when they needed it. They will feel resentful, expendable, and devalued. And when employees feel like that their performance tanks and/or they leave for other jobs.

A focus on great leadership and culture is something companies should never take their eyes of off for even a second. The result is higher performance, engagement, retention, and a stronger bottom line. And especially at times like these when it matters most, teams with exceptional culture and leadership navigate change, uncertainty, and crisis with much higher resilience and success.

Just like the proverb “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now.” It’s never too late or early to build exceptional culture and prioritize high caliber leadership. Start now, never stop.
